Herbivore – Lapis Oil Facial Balancing Oil

collage_20160320095726448_20160320095851622.jpgHi all! Been a while since I’ve last posted a review.  I’ve been following your posts all these time so given the little pocket of time I can find in the middle of sorting out my home renovation, am doing a post of a product that I’ve used this year.

This is a product that I have purchased from Sephora USA using Ezbuy (formerly known as  65daigou). The product is priced at around USD72 for 1.2oz.

About the Brand

From Herbivore website: “We bring you truly natural, cruelty free skincare that provides results you can see and feel. We also believe skincare should smell and feel amazing and add enjoyment to your daily routine.” Products are handcrafted and produced in small quantities. In a way, you can consider this as boutique brand that is only available for sale online.  Currently this brand cannot be found in Singapore.

About the Product

The product aims to reduce redness and to bring balance to the skin moisture. Ingredients include blue tansy which is also the key component for the highly raved Blue Cocoon by May Lindstrom. Other oil ingredients in this product includes Kukui Nut Oil (high in Linoleic Acid, good for acne prone skin) and Jojoba Oil (fairly balanced ratio between Oleic and Linoleic Acids). Coconut Oil can also be found in this product though if you have acne prone skin, this may or may not be of concern because it depends on the ratio that Coconut Oil is used in this product. The texture of the oil is thin and runny, and it has a blue tinge due to Blue Tansy.

Using this Product

I had used this product for 2 months. It was light and absorbed well. I had used this right after toning my skin.  Each time, I will use between 4 drops (for day) to 5 drops (for night). However, I did notice that the oil does not stay on well in humid Singapore because of, hence my skin will still feel dry after 4 hours in air-conditioned environment. As such, I will recommend to only pat on this oil after your usual moisturizer if you are going to be in the air-conditioned room for a full day. Personally I will recommend used of powder sunblock instead of emulsion based sunblock after patting on this oil as powder sunblock should stay on better.  I have not tried this product in dry temperate countries, but the reviews for this oil has been rather good.  In terms of bringing down redness, I would say that SKII Facial Treatment Essence delivers a much quicker effect (its like in 3 secs I see the redness disappear after patting on the lotion). This oil may not bring about as visible effect or as quickly. Hydration wise, I like this oil for night application and it does make my skin appear smoother the next day (not that the acne disappear but just that the rough skin seems to smoothen out).

Buying this Product

I will consider buying this product again for the hydration – though fact is a bottle will last a long time since only a few drops are used at a time. After 2 months, my bottle still seems like I’ve only a reasonably small fraction of the bottle.  You can purchase this product directly from Herbivore Beauty website or from Sephora USA website. For those of you who want to try out the  product before buying full size, you can order the rollerball version to test the product.

Have you used any Herbivore products before?

Skincare Tip – Daily Skincare Essentials (Part III)

Hi all, I’m back after a long hiatus. Been really busy at work so here I am sharing with you the 3rd instalment of my daily skincare essentials. This time, its on Moisturizing.

Whether you are living in tropical country like Singapore, or in a temperate country with four seasons, Moisturizing remains an important part of our basic 3-step skincare regime. Each day, our skin, being the largest organ, is exposed to many different contaminants and impurities. Our health constitution from lifestyle and daily stresses adds on to the our skincare condition. So how do we choose our moisturizer?

From my personal experience, selection of moisturizer depends on:

1) Your skin condition – is it normal, combination, oily or dry. Normal skin usually would not have problems with over or under production of natural facial oils in tropical and humid country like in Singapore. However, light moisturizer that helps to retain good skin health remains essential. Oily skin is sometimes what I experience when my hormones are running amok or when I am under severe stress. It felt like an oil field that has no tap on it. 😀 Dry skin folks will know that good moisturizers go a long way. Takes away the dry and painful flakes, and prevents further infections on the skin.

2) The environment that you live and work in – the environment introduces external stresses to our skin, so its important that we use products that work on our skin yet at the same time protects our skin from external stresses. Warm weather increase perspiration, opens our pores but also creates adhesive for dirt and grime to stick on our face and clog our pores. Cold weather dries up the surface of our skin, and forcing more oil to the surface to maintain skin health.

So what do I use to protect my facial skin?

I have combination normal-oily skin, and my skin’s inner layers tend to be oily while the surface is dry. Hence I tend to choose moisturizers that are hydrating yet seals in moisture. The Label Young’s Shocking Mist is a decent product that I’ve been using in the day where I need to put on make up before going to work. The texture of the product seals in moisture for about 4 hours yet at the same time allow the skin to breathe and the perspiration to surface. It holds my bareMinerals Ready Foundation rather well (pseudo primer) and does not clog my pores. Another product that I use is the Albion’s Exage Moist Crystal Milk II and Herbal Oil Gold together with the Albion’s Skin Conditioner to hydrate my skin, depending on my skin condition that day.

As I work in air-conditioned office, my skin will be dry by the time I reach afternoon. This will call for additional step after I cleanse my face at night. Typically I will either apply sheet mask once a week (I use My Beauty Diary series) for more intense hydration, or to apply Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Rehydrating Rose Facial Oil and seal with NYR’s Comfrey and Yarrow Moisturizer at night.

I have subscribed to a website that gave tips on how to treat acne skin recently to learn more from those who had experienced horrible acne outbreaks. Those of you with acne problem may also want to check this site out: The Love Vitamin. Here, she’s recommended to use jojoba oil as moisturizer because it has similar texture as our facial oil, and would help to “tell” our skin not to produce anymore oil. Of course, she has many other tips to share so do check it out and learn from her amazing journey!

Let me know what has been working for you!

bareMinerals READY SPF 20 Mineral Foundation

Bareminerals Ready FoundationI have been using bareMinerals READY SPF 20 Mineral Foundation for a while now, and I thought its time I do a review on this amazing foundation. Why did I say its amazing? Its true it is mineral and many other foundations which are mineral based – but fact is, this is the only powder foundation that I’ve used so far that doesn’t give me outbreaks!

About the Product

Those of you out there who are cult followers of the bareMinerals product ranges will know that the popularity for this product spread like wild fire when its founder, Leslie, started selling its loose powder foundation on QVC in USA. The swirl-tap-buff sure got many ladies onboard and its now one of the go-to foundations for those who have problem skin. From the bareMinerals website, the active ingredients in this foundation are: Titanium Dioxide 11%, Zinc Oxide 18%. Inactive Ingredients: Boron Nitride, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Magnesium Silicate, Silica, Nylon-12, Humic Acids, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Jojoba Esters, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Lecithin, Betaine, Algae Extract. May Contain: Mica, Bismuth Oxychloride, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides. This foundation also claims to increase hydration by 108% with decent coverage (important point to note for those of you who have reddish patches on your skin like me!)

Using the Product

I have used this product with the bareMinerals brush as well as other flatheaded brushes. The coverage is good if you have some reddish patches or light freckles on your skin. For those with large acne, you can still use this product, but the bumps may be amplified to show the unevenness of the skin. Moles or dark patches that show up prominently on your skin may not be covered that well so you can say that light flaws can be covered, but if you have visible flaws such as large open pores, suggest to use a primer and concealer before using this foundation. This foundation can be layered on (do use flat headed brushes, or if you are a Sigma brush fan, use a 3DHD Precision brush would do the job just fine to create a nice professional finish). I wore this foundation in the humid Singapore weather and it lasted me almost 6 to 8 hours (note: not perspiring okie). My skin did not feel as drying after removing the foundation too. I guess I can attest to the 108% more hydration. Also, I noticed that when I have small pimples, using this foundation actually help to dry them up! (Gosh!). I am not sure if its gotta do with the ingredients in this foundation but hey, it doesn’t clog and helps with drying up small pimples – thumbs up!

Where to Buy this Product

I like to stock this up when I am overseas or when I have friends travelling to USA (its a lot cheaper there). In Singapore, you can purchase it from Sephora and its always good to stock up when its your birthday month (those of you with Sephora’s white card or black card) so that you get some discounts. Otherwise, there are plenty of online shops that ships for free worldwide so do google on!

Lush – Mask of Magnaminty

Refreshing, hydrating and brightening
Refreshing, hydrating and brightening

One day I walked into the Lush outlet at Orchard Gateway and asked for their best selling mask for problem skin. The sales person recommended the Mask of Magnamity. After a quick try of the product at the shop, I made the purchase and hope to do a review on this amazing product.

The sales person told me that there are two formulas for the Mask of Magnaminty. One is made without preservatives (i.e. shorter shelf live) and the other has some preservatives. The effects are the same (she said). So I asked about the one that I’ve just tested at the shop. She said that I was trying out the one with some preservatives (and I thought the effect was pretty good!) so I went ahead and bought the formula that I’ve tried (and knowing that I will take some time to finish the pot).

Lush Mask of Magnamity (a1)About the Product

The product is in bright lime green, and has a texture of mud mixed with chopped / course grains. I took a photo of the ingredients in the pot (made by Aga – thank you!). As you can see, there are ground beans in the mixture. That explains the grainy texture amidst the creamy mud like paste. The mask also smell of strong peppermint that wakes you up, and the feeling of cool mud on your face seems to tell your brain that any inflammation is now calmed and contained. You will notice that the methyparaben is used in the list of ingredients.

Using the Product

The mask was not difficult to apply. I am aware of similar off-the-rack masks that could be hard to dispense. I was advised to spread gently on my face (avoiding the eye and mouth area) and to leave the mask on for 15mins to 20mins before washing off the product with room temperature or lukewarm water. I had used this product after my usual cleansing routine (Facial Foam and Clarisonic). The skin looks brighter and calmer, and felt smooth and hydrated. The reddish patches (my skin is rather sensitive) also seems to fade. I had followed on with my toner and moisturizer right after this to seal in the moisture.

Where to Buy this Product

Lush is available in several countries, including Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. I had noticed that most of its followers like their invigorating bath bombs.

In Singapore, you can order from Lush Online Shop, or walk into their outlets in Orchard Road and some neighbourhood malls.

Enjoy the mask!

Label Young – Shocking Oil

Label Young Shocking Oil
Oil that does not feel like oil

My Label Young Shocking Oil only has a third of the bottle left so I think I should provide my review on this product to those of you who are still thinking whether to grab this product or not.

About the Product
The uniqueness of the Label Young Shocking Oil is that this product does not feel like the oils you see in the market. Yup you heard me! It does not feel like oil but more like dense gel that becomes watery when it comes into contact with your hands. However, it delivers similar levels of moisture just as how other oils would. The product is light yellow clear liquid with tiny red, blue and yellow beads that breaks open to deliver vitamin A (moisture and nutrients), vitamin C (tighten pores and increase pore resilience) and vitamin E (keratin and ringworm CARE) respectively. Its always a surprise what colour beads are discharged from the bottle each time I pour out the contents from the bottle.

According to the product publicity, the product can be used to moisturize your hair ends, and to moisturize dry patches of skin on the body, and mixed with your bb creams to create a dewy effect.

Free from 20 Additives : Parabens, Ethanol, Benzophenone, Steroids, Artificial Colours, Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Sulphate, Acid Sikrik Saline, Triclosan, Benzyl Alcohol, DM Hydantoin, Methyl Isobutyl non Jolly Teeth, Mineral Oil, Quaternium-15, Phenyl Salicylate, Dia Jolie Attend Urea, Inorganic Sulfate, Chlorobutanol, Propionic Acid. (Source: Koreadepart)

How to Use the Product
I have combination skin that is oily inside but mildly dry on the surface. I have also mentioned in my earlier post that I am a proponent for use of facial oils.

With Label Young Shocking Oil, I usually pour a bean size (size of 10c coin, or abt 1cm in diameter), spread it between my palms to break the beads and to warm before I apply it directly on my skin with light massaging strokes. The skin does not feel sticky after application, and I also did not experience any outbreaks after a few days of use.  There will be days when I get a little lazy and decide to apply the oil directly on my face instead of applying it after toner. Both methods worked for me. On using the product with other toners, I have used Albion Skin Conditioner in place of Label Young Shocking Toner with no side effects or outbreaks. Overall, I continue to receive the hydration from this product for 3 to 4 hours in humid environment. However, if you are working in dry, low humidity or airconditioned environment, I would recommend to follow on with one of the Label Young Shocking Creams or a light hydrating moisturizer for added layer of hydration.

I have not tried this on my hair ends but I did try to use it to hydrate dry patches on my body. No irritations experience. I must say this is quite a good product if you need a quick surge of moisture, especially on days where you feel the skin is dry or flaky.

According to the sites selling this product, you can mix the Label Young Shocking Oil with your BB Creams to create a dewy effect.

Where to Buy the Product
In my earlier posts, I have recommended a few places where you can purchase this product – online. They are:

1) Koreadepart – this online shop carries multiple brands of korean skin care products. I have had a recent Label Young haul from here.

2) Qoo10 – Search for “label young” or “labelyoung” and you should find a few vendors carrying their product range. This is not a new product so it should not be difficult to find it on Qoo10.

3) Label Young Official Online Shop (Korean) – If you can understand Korean, this is the site for you regardless of where you are. They have the most up to date Label Young product ranges on this site.

Have you tried this product? If so, do share with me what you think of this oil! 🙂

Update: Label Young has recently released Shocking Oil ver 2. I would love to try and give my review after I have gone through my recent Label Young Haul from Koreadepart! 😉

Label Young – Panku Skin & Lotion, aka 2 in 1 Special Pore Care (Shocking Skin & Lotion)

wpid-20141228_221825.jpgI am so excited that many of you out there have been reading up on my blog post for Label Young product. I wish to thank you all for the support and it is your support that encouraged me to go on to try its other Label Young products – which by far, is one of the most economical (and paraben free) skincare product that I’ve used yet does not give me outbreaks or other skin care problems.

Alright, I won’t keep the suspense any longer. I present to you my review on the Label Young Panku Skin & Lotion, also known as 2 in 1 Special Pore Care (Shocking Skin and Lotion)!

About the Product

This product claims to be an all-in-one product that “Soothes skin gently and provide rich moisture and nutrition.” It aims to “treat pores from inner skin without the use of ethanol”. The “rich moisture and nutrition refreshes the skin by providing it with a glow” and it “controls oil from the sebum and shields the skin from impurities and dust. Its moisture shield also enables better moisture absorption. (Disclaimer: the above description is paraphrased from Koreandepart website where product description could have been translated directly from its original korean description) Now, we need to be clear that the word “tighten” is relative and depends on the size condition of one’s pores and yes, this product’s key ingredients are “bentonite (containing more than 60 kinds of natural minerals), kaolin, ECOCERT organic ingredients, blueberry extract, lemon extract and lime”. The koreandepart website wrote that this product does not contain the following additives, namely: Parabens, ethanol, mineral oil, triclosan, phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, artificial colours, triethanolamine, petrolatum, imidazolidinyl urea.

However, I discovered that this product has dimenthicon that usually gives a relatively smooth feel after you apply on your skin. I have mentioned previously that products with dimenthicon did not work well for me. Now why did I went ahead to try this? Its you, my readers! Nothing gained without trying, right? 😉

This product has a very soft and somewhat flora / citrus scent (oh, and I so love it), and is dispensed in the form of emulsion (i.e. slightly dense white milk in a simple bottle – see picture on the right). My feedback for Label Young is perhaps, a squeezable bottle can be used because it is indeed quite challenging to get the product out given its texture. A pump could also have done the job.

Based on the instructions on used of this product, it said that this lotion can be used on its own without its accompanying gel cream from the same product family (and yes! I am going to blog about it when I use it for a while longer)

Using this Product

I have been using this product for about 2 weeks now. I didn’t break out after using it and I find the scent rather refreshing and welcoming. I have combination skin which is oily under the skin and dry on the surface. After using this product for the period, the oil does seem to surface later and lesser then it normally would but it won’t be as effective if you are having one of those days where your face just produce a lot of oil due to hormones etc.

After washing my face, I will use just a 10cent size (about 10mm in diameter for a dollup) and warm it in my palm before applying / spreading with both hands on my face. I will try to pat lightly using the warm palms to help with absorption into my skin. This is only if I am going to be out and about in the humid tropical weather. When I am at work (air-conditioned) or at night, I will layer on (thinly) the Panku Gel Cream on my face to increase the hydration. Note: I did not need to apply additional toner before I use this Lotion.

After using the the product, I feel that my skin (esp on my cheeks) are very smooth. I did have some whiteheads popping out since I’ve started using it (this could be due to hydration that plumps up the inner walls of the pores and forces the loose whiteheads out). I can’t really attest much about the pore size as my large pores have been there for a long time.

Where to Buy this Product

As mentioned in my previous blog post, this product is not sold over the counters in Myeong Dong or in Singapore. I had to scour the internet to look for the vendors who bring in the products. Couple of places you can get hold of this product:

1) Qoo10 – search for “label young” and the website should cough up a few vendors that carry the brand.

2) Koreadepart – Oh yes, this is a good place to get your label young products. They do have discounts from time to time and I recently bought some of the other label young products at below USD10 each. However, do not that international shipping is only free if you chock up USD200 worth of purchases. This site does carry a lot of other popular Korean brands, so plan your purchases!

3) Label Young website – I had provided this link in my earlier Label Young product post, and I did notice that it had received a number of clicks. As mentioned previously, this site is in Korean and it could only be shipping within Korea. Best to get your native korean friends to help you with the orders. 🙂

So are you ready to share with me your experiences with the Label Young products?

Biosmos – Olio Essenziale Tea Tree

Tea Tree Oil from Italy that can be used neat and directly on skin without causing burns
Tea Tree Oil from Italy that can be used neat and directly on skin without causing burns

The Olio Essenziale Essential Oil by Biosmos was a product recommended to me by my beautician at Face Essensuals. This tea tree oil comes with a guarantee card that certifies that the tea tree oil is definitely safe (even if you were to consume it like what some users do with Young Living essential oils). I am not adventurous and has always been very careful with essential oils especially after reading about the potential side effects if they were not handled with care.

Biosmos is an italian skin care product company set up by a beautician with many years of experience.  I had used the Biosmos Aloe Vera Oxygenating Water with much satisfaction of its effects hence was not adverse to purchase another of its product. I had purchased this tea tree oil from Face Essensuals to apply on my acnes. Sometimes, when the skin acts up, I do end  up with painful acne on my face that I want to seek quick relief. Though this oil does not give instant relief, it does help to bring down the redness and relief some painful sores from the inflammation. If you have mosquito bites, it can also help sooth the itch with its cooling effect. I have used other tea tree oils from Body Shop as well as Thursday Plantation – I still prefer to use this product because it feels thinner and is quickly absorbed by the skin. In fact, I’m on my second bottle of this product.

How to Use this Product

When you open the fresh bottle, you will need to replace the bottle cap with the dropper that is provided in the box. To use, drop some of the tea tree oil on a cotton swap and apply directly on your skin e.g. acne, insect bites, etc.  You will notice that the tea tree oil is very watery and to some extend looks like water.  As tea tree oils are usually quite strong and known for some form of toxicity, I would stick with using cotton swaps just so that I would not accidentally touch my eyes when I still have product on my fingers.

Where to Purchase this Product

1) If you are based in Singapore, you can purchase this Tea Tree Oil (about S$60+) from Face Essensuals located at 220 Orchard Road, #03-10 Mid-Point Orchard, Singapore 238852; Tel: +65 6732 8237 (Look for Ms Serina Leong). Do give Face Essensuals a ring before you go down to the shop to check if they still have stock on hand. A small bottle goes a long way. 🙂

2) If you are overseas, you can purchase online via the Biosmos Official Website. However, I would recommend that those based in Singapore purchase directly from Face Essensuals because the items sold at Biosmos website are priced in Euros and you will need to factor in the shipment costs which may turn out to be more expensive to purchase online. The website is billingual in Italian and English.

Dr. Wu Special Treatment – Intensive Skin Renewal Serum w/ Mandelic Acid

Mild mandelic acid for skin renewal
Mild mandelic acid for skin renewal

I have been using this product for a long time to help improve the renewal of my skin on days when it feels rough or when I feel that my skin is not able to absorb the skincare products well.

From my research on the internet, “Dr.WU is a line of highly effective skincare products developed with advanced patented technologies to target various problems in Asian skins. Based on 40 years of clinical experience and extensive skincare research, the founder Dr. Ying-Chin Wu has created the technologically advanced skincare line so that patients can enjoy the same medical treatments just like having a doctor at home.”

Product description on Dr. Wu’s website states that the “Intensive Renewal Serum With Mandelic Acid 18% is a revolutionary home spa facial treatment using several patented technologies and ingredients to refine skin texture, diminish fine lines and improves skin elasticity and firmness. It contains Mandelic Acid 18%, which is used in Chemical Peeling procedures, to effectively diminish the appearance of fine lines and stimulate the skin desquamation process to achieve a smoother and brighter skin, even improves skin tone by resurfacing epidermis and removing aged layers. Formula also contains Sodium Hyaluronate, Tinocare GL and Biophytex which can be easily absorbed by the skin to facilitate hydration, and reduce dark spots and freckles, therefore to make skin brighter and more clear.”

Although I have not seen visible improvements in the size of my pores, I did notice that my skin is a lot smoother, and occasionally I have white heads popping off my pores with just a light rub while washing my face. My pores also do not clog as much (this is what I noticed when I visit my beautician – she does not have to push out a lot of white or black heads).

How to Use The Product

A sales lady at Watsons had advised that I should use this serum twice a week to improve the texture of my skin. From my experience, the serum should be applied onto the skin using cotton swap due to its acidic nature, after washing and drying the face. Special care need to be paid to avoid the eye area and around the mouth. After applying the serum using the cotton swap, wait for a few seconds and apply your usual moisturizer to lock in the moisture while the serum works on renewing your skin through mild peels. One should also take note that the serum should be used at night before you sleep, and not in the day time. I have never used it in the day since the day I started using this product. The next morning, you will notice that your skin is smoother, but you do not see any bits of dead skin like what some of the BHA and AHAs peels do. Wash your face normally the next day and continue with your normal skin care routine.

Another point to note is NEVER use this serum when you have open wounds or are experiencing skin sensitivities such as allergies or redness. Consult your doctor if you are unsure if your health conditions permits you to use this product. Do not touch the serum with your bare hands either. Stick with cotton swaps.

Published product key ingredients: Mandelic Acid 18%, Tinocare GL, Sodium Hyaluronate, Biophytex.

Target: Rough and Sensitive Skin

Where to Buy the Product

1) If you are in Singapore, you can get it from Watsons outlets

2) If you are overseas, you can purchase it online via Dr Wu’s Official Website . This is a bilingual website so it should not be difficult to shop for those who can read english or mandarin.

Let me know your experience from using this product! 🙂

Beauty Salon in SG – Face Essensuals

I had problem skin and I had been through almost all the IPLs and Laser procedures that is available in town. each time I go to a dermatologist, I come out with a few hundred bucks lesser in my wallet.

imageIt was not until I was recommended by a colleague to make an appointment with Serina Leong, the sole proprietor of Face Essensuals. She is not a doctor but it was her personal determination to help me improve my skin condition that saved me the thousands that I could have spent on treatments and clinic fees.

I used to have very bad outbreaks that scars my face. For the longest time, I almost could not see my chin because of all the angry acnes and painful bumps on my T-zone. It was a real nightmare. So much so that I had to resort to makeup to cover up the scars.

Three months after I visit Face Essensuals,  I noticed visible improvement on my skin!  My outbreaks reduced and I was able to gradually narrow down to the contributing factors of the outbreaks. Another six months down I junked the dermatologist’s skincare products and started moving to something cheaper and off the shelf. A major regret I didnt manage to take any before and after photos then. It was just amazing!

It is usually not Serina’s style to recommend or suggest products to her clients unless she thinks that the products would work well for them. So from time to time I will have to ask her for recommendation of some of the new products that she carries.

Face Essensuals does not carry the common spa or skincare big brands such a Dermalogica or Decleor. Serina will change the product ranges in the salon if she finds that the products do not meet her clients’ skincare conditions. So far, Face Essensuals have had product ranges from France, Italy, Dubai (surprise!) etc and she never applies it on her clients if she has not tried it herself and be satisfied with it.

I have recommended friends to this salon and they have been with her since with wonderfully positive feedback. If you are in Singapore and wants to receive a no frills and no product peddling beauty salon, make an appointment with Face Essensuals. You will be happy with the service.

Visit Face Essensuals website at Face Essensuals or call Serina at +65 6732-8237 to make an appointment today!
